Zimmer NexGen Knee Replacement Recall

Two prominent Chicago orthopaedic surgeons are calling for the recall of Zimmer’s NexGen CR-Flex Knee replacement devices. The porous femoral component (that is, the part of the replacement that covers the head of the femur, the bone that goes from the pelvis to the knee) is associated with a high rate of failure. The two Chicago surgeons calling for the Zimmer recall, Richard Berger and Craig Della Valle from Rush University Medical Center, have observed after two years’ of use that 36% of the implants were loose, and 9.3% were revised or set to be revised because of looseness and associated pain.
The doctors stated that “[t]his component is still commercially available but should not be used for any patient.” They also questioned the fact that the product was released for sale to the public without clinical testing. Dr. Berger described the failure rate as “horrific.”
Dr. Berger has contacted Zimmer, but observes that they have not been receptive to his concerns.
The exact reason for the failure of the device is not yet known. The CR-Flex Knee uses a porous, non-cement femoral component. In other brands, cementless femoral components tend to work fine. However, Zimmer’s product is another story.
Zimmer issued a statement, essentially claiming that Doctors Berger and Valle simply implanted their devices incorrectly, and noting that the Australian National Joint Replacement Registry reveals a high success rate. But, Zimmer has good reason to be concerned—the NexGen products made up 2% of the company’s $1.76 billion sales in 2009, with over 150,000 sales since they hit the market in 2003.

I am slated to have a total knee replacement surgery with the Zimmer PSI knee. Is this a part of their NextGen knee replacements which seem to be failing at a much higher rate?

Had a knee replacement in May 2007, have never been happy with results because of pain and looseness of said implant. Was done by Dr. Adam Harris and he used a Zimmer according to he himself.

I had a knee replacement at Hughston Clinic in2009 my knee still hurts and has never been right. But I do not know the name of the replacement. I just know it has been almost a year and a half and it still gives me a lot of trouble. But Dr. Carlton Savory said it could take up to a year and a half for it to be ok. So I am waiting. But it is not right. Carolyn Hewett

I just had a total knee replacement in November, 2009, and needed another on the same knee in November,2010. The polymer piece that "cushions" the metal joints was protuding and was either cracked or was dislodged. I've had to go through another surgery to replace the part, another 3 day hospital stay and am now in physical therapy and trying to rehabilitate again. All this within 1 year. I think I need an attorney. Has anyone else had to go through what I've just experienced?

I've had a right knee replacement and two revisions with another possible revision in the near future. My knee clicks and is relatively loose. I am in constant pain and have to endure multitudes of pain medications just to cope. The products used are Zimmer manufactured and I would like to expose those who are responsible for this.

I had a zimmer total knee replacement this past April 2010. My knee now makes loud clicking and popping sounds and hurts like hell 7 months post surgery. I was told to expect pain to continue 9-12 months after initial surgery. My knee is a constant 7-8 out of 10 regarding pain level. I don't want to think that I must endure this much pain for the rest of my life.

I no longer have the use of my right knee even though I have had the Zimmer knee (Nex Gen LPS fex size E) replaced with a new one which has not worked out as well.

I had both knees replaced on the same day Sept. of 08. I have had more pain than before surgery with both knees - mostly when rising from sitting and doing stairs, The implants are the Zimmer NexGen. I've had many tests to pinpoint the problem but all tests are negative. The pain remains, though, so I am still researchin to see if I should nave a revision.

My wife had her first total knee transplant in January 2009. Her Femur was discovered fractured 1 month later. Total knee replaced February 2009 to correct the fractured Femur. This implant had a stud on the Femur side of the implant because of the break. Constant pain ever since first implant in 2009. February 2010 the second implant had to be removed due to looseness. Now this third implant has been determined to be loose. Going in tomorrow December 14, 2010 to schedule for the fourth total knee replacement. All of these have been Zimmers. What is going on with Zimmer? Are we the only ones having this kind of problem? And by the way, knee replacements are not cheap!

I had a total knee replacement in October 2009. I don't know the manufacturer or type but I do know there is a serious problem still with my knee. I have as much or more pain now than before.

I had knee replacement July of 2009 and have had problems ever since. I was walking in the park one day and could not move my leg. I had severe pain and continue to have pain. Movement of the knee is limited and I cannot walk of stand for long periods of time. I have had X-Rays and a Bone Scan but they cannot find anything wrong. My knee is worse than it was before the operation.

I had a knee replacement July 26th, 2010 with a Zimmer Knee replacement. My knee know grinds/clicks when I extend my knee and drive me crazy and I still experience post op pain. Has anyone else experienced this almost "motorized knee grinding when extending the knee?"

I had my replacement Sept 1st and I am more inmobile then I was before. I am unable to be up on my feet for very long, feels like I have twisted my knee really bad. There is terrible popping , shifting and grinding feeling that goes on 80% of the time. Its crazy. At this point I wish I had not had it done.I was in really bad pain before, but what I have to deal with now is nuts.

I had a knee replacement in Jan 1997, I have a Zimmer, NexGen Knee implant type, it took me about 12 months to recover because I had a lot of scar tissue, my biggest problem was the 90 degree bend. I did WATER THERAPY and that was the best for the range of motion. Back then my Dr told me that the implant should last at least 20 years without any problems, depending on my intensity of activities, I don't run, can't kneel, it is hard for me to get down to my hand and knees but I do, I do walk, ride bike, do water exercise, wear medium heals shoes 2-3 inches high, go dancing. I am very careful when it comes to ice and snow, I have fallen on my driveway because of black ice. Is there any one who goes back to 1997 that is having a problems with this type of implant?

I had (L) total knee replacement 11/20/2006 and then (R) tkr 10/01/2007. I have never had any problems with the left knee. But I have had problems, pain, cracking and popping sounds from the right one for 2 years now. I don't know why there is such a difference in them. My left one is a Zimmer CR and the right one is a Zimmer CR Flex.

R-TKR 18 DEC 06
R-revision 12 MAR 07, still have sore ness, popping, clicking, can only stand a few minutes, walk short distances, never feels right.
L-TKR 20 AUG 07, after 12 or 14 months, feels almost normal, once in awhile a little discomfort but for the most part a normal knee.

I had a knee replacement in 2007 and it never got well just kept hurting and began to swell. I went back several times within the 1st year because it continued to hurt but was told that it would just take a while to heal. I finally went back to the orthopedic Dr that did the replacement in January of this year 2010 and insisted that something was wrong. He then did and MRI and found that the replacement had come loose and that the bone was growing up around the replacement. I had to have that one removed and another one done which was much more invasive. I am not sure what kind of replacement was used but sounds familiar.

ihad a zimmmer knee replacement dec. 11, 2007 and have a lot of pain since and now i found out the hole thing cameloose and created an infection so now my doctor says i have to have that one taken out and lay in the hospital until the infection is gone before he will put the new one in so i contacted a law office and started a lawsuit against them because i had to retire early and in a year i will lose most of my retirement sincei had to take a graduated retirement and it won't be enoughto live on.

I have had two Zimmer Knee replacements over the last three years and could not be happier. Like Randall, I have 135 degrees of flex and full extension on both. Rehab is REAL important in order to get past the constant pain. All I know is I went from a cronic 7 in pain to pain free. Dedication to the therapy is a must.

On December 1st, 2009 I had a Zimmer Next Generation knee installed and by Febuary 2010 had to go in for a manipulation because I could not move the knee above 20 degrees. By june my prosthesis had loosened up and my leg was shaped like a bananna when I put weight on it and the pain was terrible. I had a revision in September and my doctor said that the prosthesis fell apart in his hands when he removed it from my leg. I would like to locate an honest lawyer to handle this case.

I had my knee replacement Aug 17, 2010 went to Therapy a couple of weeks after being hospitalized. A therapy lady was measuring my knee to see how far I could bend it, I could not bend it as far as she wanted me to so she took it upon herself to push it on up and I Hollered and cried when she did it, and she said I did'nt mean to make you cry, I cried because it hurted she locked it up, and I had to go back in the hospital a month later to get it unlocked and now I am worser off now, then I was before the knee surgery I quit going to Therapy because I am in worser shape now, then I was before going, the knee does not bend it feels like a piece of cememnt I pain like Hell everyday 24/7. if I don't take a pain pill I cant make it through the day I stumble more now then I did before the knee replacement and that is why I do not go to Therapy anymore and the only comment I get from the Doctor is that I am not trying hard enough, How Hard can you try when it want even flex or do anything I walk, drive, clean house, I do quite a bit and it still has not showed me anything.

But on the good side I can stand, walk, ride my bike, get on my kness for short time and get up and down.
Therapy was hell but I give it all I had I think therapy helped alot.
All in all if not for the draining of the right knee every 8 to 12 week I am ok with the kness

I had my first zimmer knee doned in jan 2006. It never flet right and during the summer 2006 it "popped". Had to have the first revision done in oct 2006. During pt, it "popped" again. I had my 3rd revision done in jan 2007. That one was miserable with constant pain. I finally had the dupuy knee put in in sept 2008. On x-ray it looks like a bionic knee. I did all my physical therapy and didn't abuse my knee and will live a life of pain. Thank you zimmer.

My husband had the knee replacement in June 2006, after the physicial thearpy he complained to the surgeon that it appeared to be larger than the other knee. He was told it was the right implant and this was normal. He continued complaining about the popping sound and how he felt like it was going to buckle under him. He has continued to live with this pain. In January we saw another orthopaedic surgeon and after test he concluded the patela was loose and his pain sitting, standing or complete bed rest seems to be caused by this. The only reamedy to this is another replacement. He is 72 years of age and has to go through a more extensive procedure than the first. Why hasn't the manfacturer of this product sent out notices to come in at their expense to prove that it is okay, if they say nothing is wrong with it. The auto companies have to fess up why not the medical providers and those who are making big bucks from these. I think we should all contact our congressman and complain that we need stricter guidelines for this.

My mother has had 3 kmee replacements...I know do the math!! The first knee replacement lasted about 4 years. She had compained the entire time of pain but the Dr kept telling her that the knee was artificial therefore she can't be experiencing any pain. She knows it was a Zimmer CAT 5100-6735 and LOT#47390000...any ideas where we can go to find out if this is a NexGen?

I had a TKR(left knee)on 02/13/2005 and physical therapy for 12 weeks. I had good bend on the knee but began to have terrible pain and swelling. DR. said it would take time, possibly 1 year. The pain continued to get worse with stiffening. I saw another surgeon, who on 11/24/2005 did revision surgery(Dr. David Maish).
The surgical report says it was a ZimmerLCCK. Have seen 2 other Orth.surgeons and they say live with the pain. It is as good as it will get. I still have swelling, stiffness, and pain that extends from my ankle upward to my hip. There are days that I literally can't walk on it at all. I am 61 yrs old and was a very active person. I still try to do things that I did before, but suffer for it the next day and for days to come.Help!

I had a knee replacement 11/6/2009 with a Zimmer nexgen knee, for the last six months my knee has been clunking and shifting and hurting like hell. My knee is swollen twice the size of my other knee, the Dr. who replaced it conceded that the knee is full of fluid and then gave me NAPROXEN! I had a Zimmer NexGen knee replacement in May 2008 which never quit hurting after several trips to the doctor he did a bone scan and found the bone had died and caused it to come loose. A revision was scheduled for June 2009, again a a Zimmer NexGen was used, I had terrible pain it just kept feeling worse and after several doctor visits they found the knee was infected . . . so they scheduled removal of the knee and IV therapy for 2 months then a third knee was put in this time they used DePuy LCS again I have had nothing but pain, unable to stand and I loose my balance very easily. During the last surgery they removed my kneecap. I am in constant pain, the doctor said he did not feel he could do anything to help and suggested I go to a teaching hospital to see if they can find the source of my pain. Has anyone else had 3 knee replacement surgeries in 2 years time and still unable to get pain relief? Please let me know, I don't know what to do.

I had a Zimmer NexGen right knee replacement July 2008. I am in constant pain, can't stand of a long period of time, can't walk, clicks when I extend, can't ride a bike, unable to walk up & down the stairs, and can only bend to 90 degrees. I must walk backwards down the stairs - how dangerous is this?
I have been going to physical therapy for soon to be three years. The tears that come down my face are tears of pain. Why?
I had a second surgery in July 2010, to remove what they said was scar tissue by one of the Jets orthopedists here in New Jersey, but that didn't help.
I'm only 59 years old and I don't think I can go on with this pain.

Going back in for 2nd surgery in 2 weeks. Contacted a lawyer. Will see where that gets me. Never should have done the first surgery. Motion and pain worse than before.

I had a total left knee replacement done in December of 2006 with a Zimmer implant. (Prior to the implant I had arthroscopic surgery by this same doctor for torn cartilage.) After complaining to him for more than seven months of constant pain and a crackling sound, he assured me that this was normal and the pain etc. would cease. I even underwent an extra session of physical therapy. I have not been back to him since July of 2007.
I never been able to get a good nights sleep, nor walk without a limp and pain. Is there any recourse other than more surgery?
If I had known then what I know now, I would have just dealt with the pain and continued with arthritis medication.
Thank you for your time.

I had a zimmer knee done in june of 2008, the day they let me get out of bed i told the doctor there is something wrong with it. They keep taking x rays, and say it looks fine. Sure it looks fine in a pitcher, i tell them. It hurts when it is moving. I tell them i feel like the little kid in forest gump, when he was running down the road an his braces fell apart. That's me. I will not even carry my grandkids around. It never not hurts. At times it locks up, and when i try to move it it is like a knife trying to come out the side of my leg.So if someone reads this and you have a good lawyer e-mail is rdobberowsky@gmail.com

I had this total knee in Dec 2010 and just replaced knee again in Jan 2012. What a terrible year of suffering, pulling a walker and staying home or near the car. When the doctor replaced for second time the top half fell out and bottom half sounded loose when pecked on with surgical tool which also came out.
